I'm 34, gay, and living with my partner of six years in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I'm rather experimental and adventurous sexually, but my partner tends towards the tried and effective. For this reason, I express some of my exhibitionist tendencies on fetish pic sites and talking to other fetishists. I'm not interested in meeting and hooking up, but rather sharing experiences and fantasies. There's more than once that someone I have communicated with via website, blog, or IM has given me some new ideas for new experiences.
I'd like to talk about the origins of my fetishist diversions here since I never really have told anyone about them before.
I remember as a child watching TV shows that would give me pause. Shows like "The Man From Atlantis" showed Patrick Duffy scantily clad and submerged in water for long periods of time. There were always the hot trapeze men in tights on such shows as "Circus", and the numerous danseurs on ballets broadcast by CBC. And of course the superheroes. Even the cartoon Spider-man's crotch was hot.
Beautiful pictures of Rudolf Nureyev and Barishnykov would put me in a fantasy world of beautiful lycra-clad ballet men -- an unusual fetish that I still derive a lot of pleasure from.
I had a desire to become a ballet dancer at one time (I still regret never having this opportunity), but growing up on a farm on the Prairies does limit your artistic opportunities somewhat.
I recall seeing pictures of frogmen and scuba divers in rubber suits and SCUBA gear, another fixation I developed.
...and the Olympics? Who could forget those hulking Russian track cyclists in their shiny tight rubber suits? I still have pictures stored away of Kurt Harnett in his rubber skinsuit. Then there were the lugers. In the 80's, rubber was the material of choice. I could only fantasize how awesome the feeling would be in those rubber suits. The lycra of today in sport is still very hot, but nothing will beat that look of rubber racing down the track.
In the 80's due to the aerobics craze skintight lycra was very popular. Who could forget the John Travolta crotch shots in "Staying Alive" and "Perfect"? I discovered men's exercise magazines in the early 80s (and I wasn't a sentient homo yet?). And then there were International Male and Undergear. And if you're a gay man, you know exactly what I'm talking about without any further explanation...
My lycra fetish grew as I became a teenager. I would steal my mom's pantyhose and bathing suits and dress up, eventually getting to a point of arousal where I would masturbate. Eventually I started secretly buying my own tights and speedos. As I got more serious about track and field in high school, I bought my first legitimate lycra shorts and tights. Entering university, my collection of lycra grew even more as I got into speedskating, long-distance running and skiing. At that time in the late 80s and early 90s, lycrawear was popular for men and easy to find.
In my early teens I started experimenting with anal stimulation and eventually integrated this into my masturbation routines. I should've known back then that I was a card-carrying homo, but there were many other social stigmas that kept me in the closet until my mid-20s. I liked dick but wouldn't admit it!
It was also around this time that I started experimenting with rubber - rubber gloves and condoms used more in a breath control sense than as actual clothing. This didn't really expand as a fetish until university when I would sneak rubber gloves with me into the dorm showers, put them over my head and masturbate. With the breath control factor, climax came very quickly and this allowed my 'public' masturbation sessions to end without suspicions of 'foul play'. Condoms would provide a masturbation reservoir in situations requiring discretion and/or cleanliness.
I don't really recall thinking too much more about rubber fetish in a clothing sense until I got my scuba diving certification in the mid-90s and bought my first couple of wetsuits. When I was alone at home, I would don the cold-water neoprene suit (sometimes with a unitard or something underneath) and wear it until I was hot and sweaty, put on some sort of breathplay contraption (I think it was around the same time I got my first gas mask) and masturbate in the suit.
Certain movies in the 90s got me thinking more about rubber clothing, rubber enclosure, breathplay, mummification and vacuumization.
One scene I recall being influential was from "Fire in the Sky" when the aliens took the abducted guy to a room on the alien ship, covered him with a sheet which was sprayed with a mist that made it latex-like, trapping and suffocating the man underneath, finally popping a hole in the material to insert breathing tubes into his mouth. The coverage was tight, like being vacuumized to the point the man was immobile. The only thing that would have made that scene better would have been if the man had been stripped naked first! His panicked thrashing was so intense!
There was another scene from the movie "F/X" where a bad guy was chasing the good guy and got trapped under a plastic wrap machine, which started up and wrapped his head and upper body under tight clingwrap. He was suffocating until the good guy came back and made a deal with the bad guy, finally popping a hole in the clingwrap to allow him to breathe again.
Another scene was from "12 Monkeys" when Bruce Willis was donning the skintight rubber suit as the baselayer of his environmental suit to protect him on the Earth's surface. I fantasized about that suit for a long time (as well as Bruce in it)!
More recently, the Merovingian "Club Hel" fetish club scene in "Matrix: Revolutions" was one of the best I've ever seen with so much latex! Lots of homo and hetero tomfoolery going on behind those closed doors. I wish I could find some behind the scenes footage of that filming set.
I'd like to find more rubber on celluloid. I'm sure there is some good gay rubbersex porn out there, I just haven't found it (or been able to afford it - no doubt to be imported from Germany!).
In the late 90s I moved to Calgary and let my budding homo go. I began exercising more, bought a road bike, met the right people and eventually found myself competing in triathlons and running races. As I progressed I had more and more success and eventually wanted to focus on those events that I was proficient at. I became a elite-level track and road cyclist and continue to race at National level on the track. The early 00's found me spending a lot of time at the velodrome in Calgary, honing my skills and power while at the same time increasing my skinsuit collection and enjoying the fringe benefits of being a gay guy in a sport full of buff, muscular men who wear skintight lycra suits as standard uniform. It is still one of my secret pleasures. I'm out to my racing team and many of my cycling friends/competitors, and many of them find joke in this relationship between cycling and lycra and me being gay to boot. When you think about it, how many straight guys that track/road race competitively could make any judgment calls anyways, wearing what they do? I think many of them secretly enjoy it too, in a hetero-, non-appreciative way! ;-)
It wasn't really until the early 00's and high-speed internet that I got a full glimpse of the immenseness of what is the rubber fetish community. I found more groups and retailers online than I ever would have thought possible, and it was on some of these fetish sites that I began to consider experimenting in rubber. I was initially surprised on the internet by the number of gay rubber and lycra fetishists out there. There were so many pictures of beautiful men in skintight rubber, rubbermen sex play, breathplay. It was all so dizzying and erotic.
I also realized how small the community of ballet fetishist is. There are many men out there that get off on the female look of ballet - tutus and leotards over tights, but that's not for me - hey, I'm gay! I'm all about the men and the masculine form. I'm attracted to that balance of gracefulness and power simultaneously - the gazelles of humanity, the asthetic lines created by their bodies, muscles and skintight clothing, and of course the PACKAGES! Almost nothing left to the imagination, but enough to keep you fixated!
Once I tried it all myself, I was hooked and haven't looked back since!
I would consider myself primarily a rubberist now as my lycra fetish has sort of fallen by the wayside and is something I would now consider more utilitarian because of my hobbies.
My first fetish rubber purchase was a bondage balloon from MEO in the UK along with a couple of rubber hoods. This first attempt was disheartening -- the balloon broke on the initial attempt to get inside, and the masks were too big (although still did the trick!).
I'm still learning what works best in general and for me specifically, but it's all been a fun, exhilarating, slippery ride!
