PROFILE: Whistler Sliding Center

LINK: Whistler Sliding Centre

Location: Blackcomb Mountain, Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

Sports: Bobsleigh, luge, skeleton

Spectator capacity: 12,000

Type: New

Cost: $104.9 million

Start and finish of construction: June 2005-December 2007

Details: Originally set to cost $55 million, this venue was one of those hit hard by the rising cost of concrete, steel and labour. VANOC’s contractors worked hard to have the facility finished by the end of 2007 and, on Dec. 18, the first tests were performed by Canadian bobsleigh champions Pierre Lueders and brakeman Justin Kripps. The track was certified by international sporting federations in March 2008, after which the Canadian national team held its first training camp.
