Henry Cavill, perhaps best known from TV's racy historical series The Tudors, has landed the role of Superman in a forthcoming reboot of the superhero film franchise.
The British actor, who portrayed Henry VIII's friend and brother-in-law Charles Brandon on The Tudors, will star as both The Man of Steel and his mild-mannered alter ego, Clark Kent, in a Warner Bros. film slated for release in December 2012.
No official title has been released for the movie, which will be directed by Zach Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan, who successfully revived the Batman franchise.
"In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognised and revered character of all time, and I am honoured to be a part of his return to the big screen," Snyder said.
He also praised Cavill as "the perfect choice to don the cape and 'S' shield."
Cavill, 27, had been a lead candidate for Superman Returns, the last cinematic attempt at the Superman tale. However, a switch in directors (from McG to Bryan Singer) ultimately resulted in the casting of actor Brandon Routh for the 2006 film.
Good choice. Henry is very talented and also very easy on the eyes.
